This is a class for both NEW students and those who have taken the Introductory class. New students will learn how to combine your photographs with encaustic wax! Encaustic wax, used while melted, is an ancient medium that blends beautifully with photographic images to produce rich, unique hand-made pieces.

Description

The workshop will cover safety and basic techniques of embedding printed images into the wax. We’ll then explore more complex techniques such as adding texture, painting on the image with pigmented wax, and image transfer into the wax. Each student will be able to make at least 5 small pieces using their own photographs, and all supplies are included. Students will be contacted prior to the workshop with information on sending the instructor 3 of your images to be printed and brought to the workshop for you to work with during the workshop. It is recommended to bring an apron or smock and that long hair be tied back. Contact the instructor for more information.

Those who have already taken the introductory workshop will build on what we did in the Introduction to Photo Encaustic class. They will explore ways to incorporate images into an encaustic piece such as image transfer, tissue paper prints, and gluing a matte photo onto the board, add texture with pigmented wax or plain medium, add layers to the piece, make lines, add touches with oil pastel and pan pastel, adding mixed media items such as threads or cheesecloth–all the fun stuff you can do with encaustic!
