Description

1.      No matter what level you are at in your development, we will work individually with each one of you. You can start at any time.

2.      You will learn tools that will help you to develop your skills. I will be teaching the sight-size method, a drawing technique that involves drawing an object in its exact size and proportion as it appears to the artist. It’s a one-to-one scale method that helps artists see and replicate objects from direct observation.

3.      Students will come out of this course having learned the ability to organize a clear, straightforward approach to drawing, with the ability to correct their own work.

4.      The student starts copying Bargue drawings block-ins as a means of learning sight-size method, establishing correct gesture, and constructing a drawing using straight lines. Examples will be provided for students to copy which reinforce the information discussed in class.

5.      Once you have learned the principles of sight-size technique you will move on to cast drawing which will help you to draw the three-dimensional forms.

6.      As the student progresses, he/she will move to painting in black and white, and then to colors.

7.      You will apply the techniques learned in drawing to your oil painting. Painting is 80% drawing, the rest is just technique of how to mix, apply color, the use of hot and cold colors, how to paint atmosphere, the use of chiaroscuro, glassing and Scumbling, etc.

ABOUT SAUL ROLDAN

Saul Roldan, born in Brooklyn NY, I started drawing and painting at a very early age. Later I had the opportunity to study classical art. I studied at Pennsylvania academy of fine art, Art student league in NY.  Due to family responsibilities I had to divert my interest and entered the field of graphic design where I worked as an illustrator and book and magazine designer. Six years ago, I went to Florence academy of fine art, in the NJ branch, to study sight and size techniques, since then I have been painting full time.

In my painting I practice several classic techniques such as grisaille, Venetian under painting, finishing it with glazes. Sometimes I use the direct painting method. But I usually paint in layers. I like to paint with strong shadows that highlight the lights and the forms.
