Cyanotype Prints: Images in Blue and Beyond the Blue

In this workshop taught by M. Kathleen Warren, students will create cyanotype prints using their own personal digital images then explore creative modifications to the original prints in blue. We’ll discuss the process, applications, and versatility of this 1800’s process as adapted to the 21^st century. Students can submit up to two of their personal digital images ahead of the workshop; the instructor will make transparency negatives of these for the workshop. We’ll use the cyanotype process to make 5×7 and 8×10 blue-and-white archival prints which will be used later in the day for modifications and enhancements. Some prints will be bleached, then the entire print toned with natural substances such as coffee or black tea. Students will also get to experiment with selectively toning only parts of the print and to explore subtle use of watercolor paints or pan pastels on selected areas.
For this workshop, aprons (supplied by the student) are strongly recommended, and exposure of prints will be done outside the building.
