This comprehensive 10-week course in Pastels meets on Thursdays, 1 – 3 p.m.

Sept 10 through Nov 12 (10 weeks)

Join the journey into pastel painting (yes, it is considered painting!) Pastel painting with pigments (not to be confused with chalk) has been used from Paleolithic times, to the present! Pastel painting is known for its jewel-like qualities and is an exciting media. Students select their own subject matter to paint and can do as many art works as they desire. It is extremely versatile, with many different approaches to expression. Unlike other painting media this doesn’t require drying time, so you don’t have to wait to layer. We will be covering tools, techniques, special papers, and supplies throughout, and most sessions have demonstrations to illustrate important aspects for working in pastel. This is a comprehensive course.

While students are strongly encouraged to bring their own materials, bearing in mind that a set of high-quality pastels can be costly, Michelle gives less expensive options in the marketplace, if you are just starting out, and want to try the media, and don’t want to invest right away.

Similarly, there are options to use Chelsea Art Center Supplies for a class fee of $5, per class time, if needed (Speak with CAC Dr. Barbara Fife for permission).

Short Bio for Michelle Curry

Michelle Curry is an award winning 2-D multidisciplinary artist, whose works have been acquired by corporations and private collectors alike in the US and the UK. She regularly shows her work, does commissions, and some art restoration. Her background is in traditional Fine Art, stemming from 40+ years, while intermittently attending 7 full years in college, as well as holding 2 degrees in Illustration and Graphic Design, and is a lifetime member of Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society.

Michelle is passionate about teaching! She covers comprehensive principles and techniques, including “All the things,” pertaining to each specialty. Her major vision for teaching is to equip students and artists to develop the necessary skills to be able to artistically achieve their own voice in their choice of media, style and subject matter, ranging from realism, through impressionism, into abstraction. The particular teaching method she uses is good for the novice, intermediate practitioner, to advanced and professional artist.
